STRUCTURE

Analyses of the city are expected to provide insights for the development of a spatially specific concept, unfolding local susceptibilities of the urban structure. Starting from this concept and a multidisciplinary approach between urban planning, water and flood risk management and landscape architecture, the developed proposals should define different infrastructure measures for upper, middle and lower catchment areas. These measures will inform the development of alternative scenarios to enhance water sensitivity and flood resilience, according to explicit topographic and local conditions in the city.

The Course will last for 2 weeks, articulated through Lectures, Seminars (Expert Meetings) and Workshops, where participants will develop analyses, concepts and designs in a ‘pressure cooker’-environment. Divided into five working groups, the teams will be led by scholars with a transdisciplinary background on water and flood risk management, urban planning and environmental design and a group of international architects from internationally renowned offices like UN-studio, West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture and MVRDV. The aim is to cover a complete design process including an analysis, the definition of a concept and finally a design.

All Lectures, Seminars (Expert Meetings) and Workshops will be in English/Portuguese.
